The New Privacy Reading Series

NEW PRIVACY BEGINS! with Kirsten Kaschock on Friday, November 18th, 2011.  PDX, OR.

Kirsten Kaschock is the author of two books of poetry: A Beautiful Name for a Girl (Slope Editions) andUnfathoms (Ahsahta Press).  Her first novel, Sleight, was published by Coffee House Press in October.  She has earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Georgia and is currently a doctoral fellow in dance at Temple University.  Kirsten lives with her three sons and their father in Philadelphia, where she makes things—sometimes people.

 

 

THE NEW PRIVACY #2 - LAURA GIBSON. December 16th, 2011. 8pm. PDX, OR.

Multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter Laura Gibson grew up in a small isolated logging town called Coquille, in the South Coast region of Oregon, the daughter of the town’s kindergarten teacher and a forest ranger. 

Since the release of 2009’s Beasts of Season, which NPR called “nothing short of a masterpiece” and Mojo called “both quietly devastating and life-affirming”, Gibson has seen her career swell to include everything from modeling in a Japanese fashion magazine, to receiving a standing ovation from an auditorium full of prison inmates.

She is currently prepping her 3rd full-length record, La Grande, which, according to Gibson is “the best thing I’ve made, ever”.

THE NEW PRIVACY #3 - BEN OLSEN. Friday, January 20th, 2012. 8pm. PDX, OR.

Ben Olsen is a photographer, painter, printmaker, performer, parent and only just recently, a poet.  For 2012, he is creating an ambitious multidiscipline collaborative performance combining dance, video, costumes, technology, music and poetry.  He lives with his two boys in a house by a stream.

 

THE NEW PRIVACY #4 - MELANIE NOEL on Friday, March 23rd, 2012. 8pm.  PDX, OR.

MELANIE NOEL's poems have appeared in Filter, Weekday, Weird Deer, and are forthcoming in The Arcadia Project and The Volta. She’s also written poems for short films and installations, and from 2006-2008 co-curated APOSTROPHE, a dance, music, and poetry series in Seattle. 

NEW PRIVACY #5 was a secret guest and took place on Friday, June 29th, 2012.

NEW PRIVACY #6 will be Friday, September 28th, 2012 and is JAY PONTERI and MISSY WARD.

MISSY WARD lives in Portland, Oregon alongside the musician and painter Bailey Winters. Her current sestinas are a reaction to cinematic framing and repetitive, bodily motion.

JAY PONTERI directs the undergraduate creative writing program at Marylhurst University and show:tell, The Workshop for Teen Writers & Artists. He is the founding editor of both the online literary magazine M Review and HABIT Books, a publisher of prose and poetry chapbooks. His memoir, Wedlocked, is being published by Hawthorne Books, April 2013. His chapbook of short prose, Darkmouth Strikes Again, is being published by Future Tense Books, summer 2013. His essay “Listen to this” was mentioned as a notable essay in Best American Essays 2010. He has published prose in Del Sol Review, Seattle Review,Salamander, Cimarron Review, Puerto Del Sol, and Forklift, Ohio, among others.

THE NEW PRIVACY #7 is KARENA YOUTZ on Friday, October 19th, 2012, at 8pm in Portland Oregon.

Karena Youtz is a poet living in Idaho.  She is the author of The Transfer Tree, which is forthcoming with 1913 Press.

THE NEW PRIVACY #8 is KATE GREENSTREET on Thursday, March 28th, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. in Portland.
